Sheffield United are reportedly keen on a move for Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney as they prepare for life back in the English Championship next season. The Blades’ interest in Cairney was confirmed bya source close to Football League World.

The Blades are back in the English Championship after two seasons with the big boys in the Premier League. On their part, Fulham are also back in the second tier after just one season in the top flight.

Sheffield United lost their manager, Chris Wilder earlier this year. The former Blades player resigned from his job and was replaced by interim manager Paul Heckingbottom who was in charge of the team until the end of the season. The Blades have moved quickly to name a new manager following the appointment of former Fulham and Watford boss SlavisaJokanovic.

Jokanovic, 52, is the new Sheffield United manager after he penned a three-year deal at Bramall Lane until 2024. It has been reported that new Blades boss wants to sign his former Fulham skipper Cairney as attention shifts to the transfer window.Jokanovic wants to lure Cairney back to Yorkshire but the Cottagers are not ready to part ways with the ex-Hull City player.

Cairney excelled under Jokanovic at Fulham between 2015 and 2017 netting 27 goals as he helped the London club secure promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs. He scored the only goal as Fulham beat Aston Villa 1-0 in the playoff final to seal a place in the top flight.Jokanovic lost his job at Fulham as the London club returned to Sky Bet Championship immediately.

Fulham midfielder Cairney helped the Cottagers secure a Premier League place again via the playoffs at the end of last season under current boss Scott Parker scoring eight goals in the process. Cairney scored one goal in the Premier League this season as he struggled with injury for large parts. He was unable to save his team from relegation to the Championship again.
